Procurement Summary
The objective is to expand the capability of the MSFC's Materials and Processes Laboratory to conduct Resonance Frequency and Damping Analysis. The goal is to conduct room temperature measurements and test a novel method for ultra-high temperature measurements. The objective will be met through the Procurement of the IMCE RFDA system and supporting equipment. IMCE provides equipment with a unique capability to measure the resonance and damping characteristics of a material specimen from which Young’s Modulus, Shear Modulus, and Poisson’s Ratio can be derived. The system has sensitive equipment for measuring acoustic signals (10Hz -100kHz). The vendor also provides custom analysis tools for processing the acoustic response at high resolution and displaying the data. The vendor additionally provides hardware for property measurements at high temperature with custom data processing tools for automatic and continuous measurements with real time displays. The tool is critical to funded efforts to develop a measurement capability for Young’s Modulus, Shear Modulus, and Poisson’s Ratio at ultra-high temperatures. This data supports material performance predictions at ultra-high temperatures above 2000C. Failure to procure this tool and develop the technique limits model and performance predictions leading to great risk of material systems at ultra-high temperatures such as those in a nuclear thermal propulsion system.
