Procurement Summary
The Formulation Lab within Therapeutic Development Branch (TDB), under the Division of Preclinical Innovation (DPI), within the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) seeks to purchase a BUCHI S-300 Mini Spray Dryer with accessories, installation, training, and warranty (brand-name or equal). The mini spray dryer is a laboratory-scale spray dryer system that is commonly used for research and development purposes in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, and chemical manufacturing. The spray dryer uses a process called atomization to transform a liquid into a dry powder form. The liquid feed is pumped through a small nozzle at high pressure, which creates a fine mist or spray. The spray is then exposed to a stream of hot gas, usually air, in a drying chamber. The hot gas evaporates the liquid, leaving behind a dry powder. Thus, NCATS DPI TDB requires a mini spray dryer to produce small quantities of powders for further testing and analysis. Moreover, NCATS has become a key partner in the Antiviral Program for Pandemics (APP), a multi-agency initiative that includes National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), to accelerate antiviral development through early discovery and preclinical development of safe and effective oral antivirals. The initial priority for the APP is to develop treatments for SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses, with the program expanding to address other virus families with pandemic potential. This system will be used to assist in the formulation development of lead APP candidates and other drug substances into phase I clinical trials. To fulfill the NCATS requirement, the mini spray dryer shall be brand-name or equal to the BUCHI S-300 Mini Spray Dryer with accessories, installation, training, and warranty, and at a minimum must meet the following salient physical, functional, or performance characteristics: 1. Mini Spray Dryer a. Evaporation capacity: 1.0 L / h H2O, higher for organic solvents b. Final particle size: 1 - 60 μm c. Yield: up to 70 % d. Collector type: Cyclone e. Nozzle type: Two fluid, three fluid or ultrasonic nozzle f. User interphase: 7' touch screen g. Sample types: water and organic solvents based h. Temperature: Maximum inlet temperature: 220°C i. InertLoop 240V 60Hz to work with organic solvents safely. Oxygen and pressure sensor included. j. Dehumidifier 230V for mixtures of solvents and water k. Glass assembly with high performance cyclone l. Stainless steel two fluid nozzles 1.5mm capacity (0.07mm each) 2. Installation 3. Training 4.
